| An illiterate Farmer designs a Water Mill to generate Electricity |
Siddappa, an illiterate farmer from Somapur village in Gadag district of Karnataka, has designed a water mill to generate electricity. Right from conceptualizing to materialisation, the farmer has done everything on his own. He operates the water mill in the canal near his house.
Using timbers, Siddappa prepared a giant wheel that joined at a central hub. There are eight arms, five feet each, extending from the central hub. A plastic bucket is dangled at the tip of each arm. When the water from two pipes gushes into one of the buckets, it generates the pressure that turns the 10-feet wheel in an anti-clockwise motion. The bucket could also be spun in the horizontal plane using a central steering wheel, similar to a teacup ride. As one after another bucket is driven by the flowing water, the first arm declines back to the ground while the other rises in the air. This process spins the black wheel attached to this giant wheel. The spinning black wheel rotates another wheel connected to a dynamo.
A converter converts the Direct Current from the dynamo into Alternating Current. Siddappa claims to have spent a mere Rs 5000 on building the entire apparatus.

| Indian girl invents device that can charge phone in 20 seconds |
An 18-year-old Indian-origin girl in the US has developed a potentially revolutionary device that can charge a mobile phone in just 20 seconds, a media report said.
The charging device has been dubbed a supercapacitor by Esha Khare of Saratoga, California, the Daily Mail reported.
Khare won $50,000 for her invention at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Phoenix.
Khare has only used her supercapacitor to power a light-emitting diode (LED), but says that one day her invention will power cell phones, cars and any gadget that requires a rechargeable battery.
Asked what inspired her to work on the technology, Khare said: "My cell phone battery always dies.".
"It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense," she was quoted as saying.
The supercapacitor is flexible and tiny, and is able to handle 10,000 recharge cycles, more than normal batteries by a factor of 10. |

| Narayan Ramakrishnan – That surefooted painter of Mumbai |
Remember that greeting card which said 'painted by a foot artist?' Malay Desai from Trinayani meets Ramakrishnan, the most famous one of them all, and discover there is much more to their lives than that.
At a time when buying greeting cards from a store was still not an unthinkable option, one often had a splendid moment of realization that the card just bought had been painted by a foot or mouth painter, and that the proceeds would go to a non-profit supporting such artists. Once in a while, we'd also chance upon a picture of one of them in the act in the inside pages of local newspapers. If you ever, for a fleeting moment wondered how they did it, or what their lives were like, here's the story of Mumbai's Narayan Ramakrishnan, one of the top names in the league.
In the chaotic suburb of Andheri, Sri Ram Nagar society is an oasis. It is easy to find a world within this lush, all-Tamilian-Brahmin locality, and Ramakrishnan, or RK as he likes to call himself,

| Khurshid Chacha, I Won't Ever Forget You |
Yoginder Sikand introduces you to the renowned scholar Khurshid Kaimkhani. Chacha, as he was fondly called, lived an extraordinary life and strived hard to work for the betterment of the underprivileged Hindus and Muslims in Pakistan. Having been forced to leave his village in Rajasthan, Khurshid Chacha travelled extensively and even penned a book about his home town. Read on to know more about him and the inspirational life he lived.
It certainly seems uncanny, but I mustn't think that it is anything other than a mere coincidence. Hardly sometime ago I penned an essay about him, suggesting that it was unlikely that we would ever meet again, for, given his age, it was improbable that he would come to India and I certainly didn't want to go back to Sindh, where he lived. And then a few weeks later the Karachi-based Dawn announced his death, at the ripe age of 80. 'Renowned Scholar Kaimkhani Dies', reads a short notice in the paper.

On a hot Amdavadi afternoon, when the roads were as deserted as they could be, the Sabarmati Ashram was buzzing with visitors. There were school kids, a group of old ladies and some foreigners taking a stroll around the ashram, mainly in the museum – "Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay". While I was roaming around, my phone rang – "Hello" – "Hello, I am standing opposite to the Ashram" – "Will be there in 5 minutes". Just as I reached the ashram exit, I had a look at the opposite end of the road. An atypical Amdavadi auto-driver, with a Gandhi Topi, waved his hand – I wondered how he recognized me, meeting for the first time.
Udaybhai, as everyone calls him, came to me and took me and my mother (who was accompanying me, which made me a little nervous as she was witnessing my work for the first time) for a ride till Safaai Vidyalaya (a very low profile unexplored place right next to the Sabarmati Ashram). While we sat in the unique auto, Udaybhai took out two badges having a smiley and pinned one of them to my t-shirt. It was only a moment of time before he started describing his rickshaw.

| Inspiring Women: Sunitha Krishnan – Fighting The Scourge Of Human Trafficking |

In commemoration of International Women's Day, we are giving away a copy of Aung San Suu Kyi's biography – 'The Lady and the Peacock' this week. Vasudha Rao did more than just tell us about a remarkable woman, she also shared her blogpost with us. Here is her account of Sunitha Krishnan – the anti-trafficking crusader!
I was introduced to Prajwala by a friend on the internet. As I read and understood what Dr. Sunitha Krishnan has done and continues to do, I was filled with admiration and respect for her.
A victim of gang rape herself, Sunitha Krishnan has risen from the ashes to rescue others from trafficking. The tasks she has on hand are just too enormous. Her organization has been instrumental in rescuing and rehabilitating thousands of women and children.

| Hyderabad Traffic Police Endeavor for Better Traffic System to Ensure Greater Public Safety!
Narsimha Reddy would have never thought that he would be on the receiving end of his job. Working as HG (Home Guard) for HTP (Hyderabad Traffic Police), on 13th July 2011, the trio of Narsimha Reddy, Kamalakar (HG) and Surya Prakash (HG) went on a ride in a single bike – unaware that Sashi – a hyderabadi denizen – had captured their violation in his camera to post it on the HTP facebook page. On July 16, HTP administrator posted the picture back on the HTP page wall stating that an inquiry was conducted on the three cops and a direct challan were issued to the rider Narsimha Reddy, who was also removed from Mobile duty and all three were sent for extra drill and severe punishment.
This was one of the cases where the HTP, with the help of city-zens, carried out its duty to ensure proper implementation of traffic matters and take strict action against the violators. While it is true that any administration cannot function properly without the support of citizens, when citizens themselves become the watchdog along with the police, it ensures that the laws are not only followed but also the non-followers do not get away

| A Wedding With A Difference – That Made A Difference!
Today we bring you a unique story. A story of two people with exemplary courage, spirit and ideals. A story that shows, more than any Bollywood movie can, that true love has a higher purpose. That marriages can achieve a lot. Even more surprisingly, what mere weddings can achieve a lot! So read, learn and be amazed.
I was thinking that morning – this is one wedding that I want to attend, that I would cherish attending, where I would delight in giving the wedding gift.
I don't enjoy weddings. I am not into competitive dressing, competitive jewelry showcasing, latest gossip, or assessing if the bride and groom are a 'match made in heaven'.
But this wedding, the wedding of Thilak and Dhana on June 1st 2012 was different. It was a wedding that 'made a difference'. How?

It was from Dr. Asad Rahmani, the Director of Bombay Natural History Society, that I first heard about this legend. His name was Ratanlal Maloo, and he had single-handedly taken care of the conservation of thousands of demoiselle cranes that come to the village of Kheechan in Rajasthan during the months of winter. And for these tireless efforts that spanned over 40 years, he was conferred the Salim Ali Nature Conservation Award in the year 2009 by BNHS.
My pilgrimage to meet this soul took me to his 200-year-old house in Kheechan. There, sitting in the shade of a khejri tree outside his house, this septuagenarian told me about his amazing journey.
It all began over 40 years ago when his uncle requested him to return from Orissa, where he was working, just to help his lonely mother cross the magical age of 100. Little did Ratanlal know that it was a decision that would change his life, and the lives of thousands of demoiselle cranes.

these are some of the most important things a mother can do for her child and humanity as a whole"

| HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN YOU ARE ALONE?? |
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!
A cardiologist says If everyone who sees this post shares it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life..
Rather than sharing jokes only please contribute by forwarding this info which can save a person's life
